In 2013 Friends of Chinbrook Meadows planted an apple orchard which was funded by the Tree Council via the “Orchard Windfalls” Fund. Local primary School children came along to help with the planting and we got all 20 trees planted with help from group members and Natures Gym volunteers.
We tended and watered them with care during the first year and only lost one tree. In 2015 there was a good crop developing and members of the group thinned out trusses so that fruit could develop without being over-crowded. Unfortunately someone took all the fruit before the community got a chance to enjoy them fully ripened. We plan to put up signs in future to inform people of the communal nature of the planting so that, hopefully, more of us can enjoy them in future years!
During the autumn/winter of 2015 we pruned some very wispy branches and added some protection to the wire protectors so that branches won’t rub on the metal. We weeded the base of the trees and added mulch provided by Glendale. It has been great to welcome new volunteers to join us on our work days and help care for the maturing trees.orchard care oct15Cmulching
