This scheme has been planned for several years and now has the go-ahead so Thames 21, who are managing the plan, are wanting to share information and hear people’s opinions and concerns. Look out for further information about consultation opportunities soon.
Here is some information from Thames 21
The project was identified by members of the local community, who noticed a foul smell coming from Grove Park Ditch, which runs south of the railway line. To improve the water quality of the ditch – and subsequently the River Quaggy because the ditch feeds into the Quaggy – the ditch’s flow will be diverted through a series of wetland ponds. Not only will this help to treat the pollution, but it will also create a place for people to connect with nature through the bridges, paths and interpretation boards that will be present throughout the site, and it will importantly provide new important wetland habitat for wildlife.
We are hoping to run several events in the park over the summer to raise awareness of the project and listen to people’s suggestions and concerns. During these events, we also want to provide volunteering opportunities through activities like water quality testing and insect surveys (as well as planting in the later stages of the project).
Our suggested dates will hopefully be approved soon by the Park Managers, at which point we can let you know when the events will be happening if you are interested – so please do send an email to me at philippa.nicholls@thames21.org.uk to register your interest. Please also feel free to share this around with anyone else you think would be interested.

Many will have heard the sad news that the amazing anti-apartheid and human rights campaigner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, died recently, aged 90. It is with great pride that we remember his visit to open the Peace Garden in Chinbrook Meadows in the summer of 2009
Archbishop Tutu lived with his family in Chinbrook Road for a few years in the 1970s and so it seemed fitting that we should commemorate this and celebrate his life and work with a garden dedicated to peace. The project was initiated by Cllr Suzannah Clarke who lived in his former home and with help from; a grant, local community groups, Glendale, Lewisham Council and garden designer, Chris Beardshaw the garden materialised and continues to be much visited.
A number of personal tributes have been left in the Peace Garden over recent days to acknowledge and remember Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s tremendous contribution to the world.
On Friday 31st December a small group of peace campaigners will meet at the Tutu Peace Garden to pay tribute, to make statements, share music and read poems. All welcome.
Our Apple Day is back on 23rd! Please come and join us to celebrate our lovely orchard. Apple cakes, apple pressing, apple tasting, apple games…get the picture! See you there
Also a chance to see our wonderful new mural on the foot tunnel, created by Artmongers for us. If you have not been before, our orchard is tucked away on the Bromley side of the railway, near Portland Road entrance (BR1 5BB). If you come from Amblecote Road entrance follow the signs.
Join us this weekend for our first weekend work session – August 28th, 11.00-13.00. Meet at the cafe.
It has been a long time and I know how much everyone has appreciated our wonderful park through these difficult months so come and show it some love at the weekend. We will do litter picking in those hard to reach corners. We may also weed round the orchard trees and, if anyone wants a proper workout, we can move some logs!
